Une gestion inappropri\u00e9e des d\u00e9chets a \u00e9t\u00e9 reconnue et prouv\u00e9e comme \u00e9tant une cause majeure de graves probl\u00e8mes de sant\u00e9 dus \u00e0 la pollution de l&#8217;air et \u00e0 la d\u00e9gradation de l&#8217;environnement. Par exemple, les processus conventionnels tels que les d\u00e9charges produisent souvent des \u00e9missions de m\u00e9thane dues \u00e0 la digestion ana\u00e9robie et \u00e0 la d\u00e9composition des d\u00e9chets organiques dans les d\u00e9charges. Les \u00e9missions de m\u00e9thane dans l&#8217;atmosph\u00e8re contribuent g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement au r\u00e9chauffement du climat, car il s&#8217;agit d&#8217;un gaz \u00e0 effet de serre 25 fois plus puissant que le CO2. En outre, le lixiviat produit lors de la d\u00e9composition des d\u00e9chets alimentaires est une source importante de pollution des eaux souterraines. Pr\u00e8s de 2,3 millions de tonnes de nourriture comestible sont gaspill\u00e9es chaque ann\u00e9e, ce qui co\u00fbte aux Canadiens plus de 20 milliards de dollars, selon une \u00e9tude du National Zero Waste Council sur les d\u00e9chets alimentaires m\u00e9nagers au Canada. Cette \u00e9tude montre que les municipalit\u00e9s locales consacrent des budgets consid\u00e9rables \u00e0 la gestion de ces d\u00e9chets, ce qui fait de l&#8217;\u00e9limination des d\u00e9chets alimentaires un lourd fardeau pour la soci\u00e9t\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Le biogaz, un sous-produit naturel du m\u00e9tabolisme microbien, peut \u00eatre utilis\u00e9 pour r\u00e9duire les co\u00fbts \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques. La ville d&#8217;Ottawa a r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 collecter du biogaz \u00e0 partir d&#8217;une d\u00e9charge contenant des d\u00e9chets alimentaires et \u00e0 produire suffisamment d&#8217;\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 pour alimenter 6 000 foyers. Cependant, la qualit\u00e9 du biogaz collect\u00e9 n&#8217;est pas assez \u00e9lev\u00e9e, car la teneur en m\u00e9thane doit \u00eatre sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 60 % pour maximiser la marge b\u00e9n\u00e9ficiaire. Cela s&#8217;explique principalement par le fait que le processus de tri grossier des d\u00e9chets alimentaires ne divise pas pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment la mati\u00e8re organique, car une gamme de rapports C:N est n\u00e9cessaire pour une production de m\u00e9thane de haute qualit\u00e9. Des rapports C:N trop \u00e9lev\u00e9s ou trop bas, dus \u00e0 des proportions diff\u00e9rentes de glucides et de produits chimiques contenant de l&#8217;azote, inhibent la production de m\u00e9thane mais favorisent les \u00e9missions de CO2. S&#8217;il est bien connu que les lixiviats contiennent un grand nombre de nutriments sous des formes disponibles pour les plantes et constituent un substitut potentiel aux engrais synth\u00e9tiques d\u00e9riv\u00e9s des combustibles fossiles, on manque encore de preuves suffisantes provenant directement d&#8217;\u00e9tudes sur le terrain, notamment en ce qui concerne la disponibilit\u00e9 des nutriments, les diff\u00e9rents r\u00e9gimes de culture et l&#8217;\u00e9valuation de l&#8217;innocuit\u00e9 dans diff\u00e9rents environnements. <br \/>Partenaires et commanditaires<br \/>Science du cycle alimentaire<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_4&#8243;
