Student Spotlight

Louis A. Colaruotolo is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Guelph Department of Food Science studying how structure impacts the shelf life of novel food-based materials in efforts to make a more sustainable and equitable food system for the future. Louis started his educational journey in culinary trade school, and driven by a mixture of curiosity, luck, and stubbornness, he is currently working on his Ph.D. under the supervision of Dr. Maria Corradini.

An adjective that is often used to describe Louis is “Loud”. In addition to his research, Louis is an active science communicator, creating and hosting a radio show on public radio called “We Know Some Stuff”. The show features casual, candid conversations between him and other recent/current graduate students as they talk about why what we learn is important and how it manifests in our daily lives. By eliminating jargon, scrapping traditional scientific talk structure, and keeping entertaining/comedic pacing, he hopes to make science fun and more approachable to lay audiences while still piquing the interest of people within the sciences. As graduate students, we are succeeding and struggling, but most importantly, learning, we don’t know everything, which is why the show is called “We Know Some Stuff”.

Much like the shelf life of foods, Louis’ time in graduate school is ephemeral. As he approaches graduation at the end of 2023, Louis wants to use his learned knowledge and communication skills to become a liaison of scientific information. He wants to help connect the latest academic research to the goals of the industry and future government policy to usher in a more sustainable food sector. He intends to use his cultivated ability to synthesize information and draw connections as learned through obtaining his Ph.D. and his loud nature to make an impact in our local and global communities.
